Councillors Secure Huge Improvements to Dangerous Road Junction

Junction of Scotts Lane, Bromley Road and Downs Bridge Road

Conservative councillors for Copers Cope ward have succeeded in getting Bromley Council and TfL to improve the dangerous junction of Scott’s Lane, Bromley Road and Downsbridge Road with installation of a new mini roundabout and pedestrian crossing. There had been 14 collisions recorded there in the 5 years to June 2020.

The proposals were approved at Bromley Council’s Environment Committee meeting on the 11th March 2021, a committee at which Copers Cope Ward Councillor, Michael Tickner, is a member.  The committee agreed the decision after officers made a site visit to observe the junction earlier in the week.  The cost is estimated at £121,000 to include a 40% contingency sum.

Councillor Michael Tickner, who has represented Copers Cope ward since 2002, commented:

“My two ward colleagues and I have been campaigning for an improvement to this junction for several years following a number of serious accidents.  Local residents will be delighted that a pedestrian crossing and a mini roundabout will be installed there.

“Traffic speeds along the A222 Bromley Road have been far too high for pedestrians to cross safely and for vehicles pulling out of Scotts Lane and Downsbridge Road.

“It is great news for the community that we have secured this outcome”.

The changes will also mean that the Bromley Road/Scotts Lane bus stop towards Beckenham will have to be relocated so that 227 busses will not hold up traffic when they stop.  It is hoped the improved junction will encourage walking to school and reduce road casualties, a key Councillors’ priority.

Local resident, Ray Williams, who lives nearby in The Gardens, said:

“This scheme will make crossing Bromley Road much safer and steady the flow of traffic. Councillor Tickner’s work in securing this essential safety improvement is greatly appreciated.

“In the forty years that I have lived near to this junction I have seen the aftermath of many accidents, invariably resulting in one or more vehicles finishing on the footway. The worst no doubt was the articulated lorry that eventually stopped in the grounds of Calverley Court, the possible consequences of which do not bear thinking about.”
